First Day

I can't say that I would describe myself as a spiritual person. This may have to do with my upbringing where matters of the spirit were confined to a rather restrictive Baptist household and the rather limited world view provided in the very "old word" Church that my parents attended (and dragged my sister and I to). Another element of my hesitant spirituality could also be attributed to my having grown up around Vancouver, where "spirituality" is infused with New Age appropriations of Eastern philosophies and religions. The kind of hippy dippy spiritualism that one can find around Kits beach or on the many islands off the shore always made me rather nervous and fidgety. I'm not into crystals and auras.

So despite teaching a course on spirituality and technology, I can't say that I am a spiritual person. That said, matters of the spirit, especially with respect to cultural and historical contexts are extremely interesting to me. Also compelling is the juxtaposition of technology with spirituality. On the surface, they may appear to be opposing forces. But as I have discovered, they are very much part of similar impulses and needs.

This is a test

This is just a test. I am planning to use this blog as a tool for a course that I will be teaching in September
